Job Description


Located on a 16-acre site in Glenageary, Co. Dublin, Rathdown School is a voluntary, fee-paying school for girls, providing Pre-School, Junior and Senior level education to both boarding and day pupils. Founded in 1973, Rathdown School is consistently ranked among the top schools in Ireland and aims to offer a high-quality, modern, challenging and liberal education in an inclusive and friendly learning environment.

We welcome pupils from Pre-School age (3 years) to Leaving Certificate level (18 years), delivering a broad range of academic subjects in small class groups, combined with a wide and varied programme of extra-curricular activities. We also provide a boarding experience which is central to school life at Rathdown, providing a warm and caring home-from-home atmosphere, and which incorporates a dedicated international programme for overseas students.

Our first-class facilities include state-of-the-art boarding rooms, a purpose-built Performing Arts Academy, a Design and Communications Graphics Laboratory, exemplary ICT resources and extensive sports grounds with fully-equipped sports hall, artificial turf hockey pitch, tennis courts, tartan cricket crease and 200m running track. 

The Board, along with senior management, are now working on an ambitious development plan for the campus to ensure that Rathdown School remains the pre-eminent educational experience for girls in Ireland, as well as adapting and evolving the campus to the changing needs of the Rathdown School Community in the coming decades.



Boarding House Matron (Part-time)


Reporting to

This role will report to the Head of Boarding and will be a key member of the boarding house team.


  • General responsibility for the care and well-being of boarders
  • Ensuring a safe and secure environment within the boarding houses and be a positive, sensitive and supportive presence at all times
  • Fulfilling assigned roster duties
  • Being punctual and encourage punctuality amongst the boarders
  • Encouraging boarders to keep their dormitories, personal spaces and common areas clean and tidy, ensuring  that they store their own belongings securely and respect the property of others and the school
  • Being familiar with the school’s policies and procedures
  • Supporting the school’s Code of Behaviour and implement, in a fair and just manner, the sanctions outlined in the Boarding Pyramid of Rules
  • Informing the Head of Boarding of any breach of the Code of Behaviour
  • Liaising closely with the Head of Boarding in relation to any student welfare issues and the progress of boarders at all times
  • Updating the Head of Boarding with a report on a daily basis following the completion of a duty shift
  • Keep a clear record of any communication with Parents/Guardians/family members
  • Informing the Head of Boarding of any family incidents/problems/issues that occur and record this information appropriately in a student’s file in the staff office
  • Liaising on a daily basis with the School Nurse, when necessary, to administer medication as advised, and record/file this information
  • Ensuring that all students in both boarding houses are approaching their work in a studious manner
  • Encouraging boarders to get involved in the wide range of extra-curricular activities offered within the school
  • Contributing to extra-curricular activities in the Boarding House
  • Engaging in team planning and accompany boarders on trips at weekends
  • Accompanying boarders to Church on Sundays
  • Participating in all school festivities e.g. Boarders’ Halloween Party, Christmas Party, End of Year Barbecue
  • Assisting the Head of Boarding at the beginning of each term to check both houses to ensure that bedrooms, common areas and furniture are in good order, clean and presentable.
  • Updating a maintenance list in the staff office on an on-going basis throughout the year to ensure that any necessary repairs are carried out promptly
  • Attending weekly boarding staff meetings
  • Undertaking additional duties that may from time to time be required, such as filling in for short-term absences of colleagues



Person’s undertaking this role are subject to vetting conducted by the Garda Central Vetting Unit.



  • Hold a current First Aid Certificate
  • Have a flexible attitude and ability to work weekends, bank holidays and sleep overs
  • Team playing ability
